The Leica M5 is a 35 mm camera by Leica Camera AG, introduced in 1971. It was the first Leica rangefinder camera to feature through-the-lens (TTL) metering and the last to be made entirely in Wetzlar by hand using the traditional "adjust and fit" method.

One of the key design aspects of the M5 is the over hanging shutter speed dial. The shutter speed dial is directly below the shutter button and can be easily manipulated with either the index or middle finger depending on your shooting style. This makes quick adjustments intuitive to the shooting process as your hand can remain on the advance lever and shutter button, whilst adjusting the shutter speed.

Body

The M5 body was a new design, larger than the earlier M series cameras. It is wider, taller and heavier than other M cameras and has twin strap lugs on one side of the body for vertical hanging. Later models have a third strap lug for horizontal hanging. The M5 was available in traditional silver chrome as well as a version called black chrome. The M5 was the first M camera to use the black chrome process, other black models in the past were usually painted.

Finder

The standard viewfinder has a 0.72 magnification with auto parallax correction. It has a RF base length of 68.5mm, with magnification is equal to 49.32 mm. The bright frame lines are automatically set based on the lenses used. It supports frame line with 35, 50, 90 and 135mm lenses. 35/135, share the same frame. There is also manual frame selector lever on the face of the camera. This can be handy to preview frame lines with other lenses. The lever can also function as a battery check. Press the lever away from the lens to activate the check. The meter bar in the finder indicates the power level. It has shutter speeds setting displayed in the finder, reducing the need to check to shutter dial.

Lens

Characterized by its sleek, unobtrusive profile, the Leica Elmarit-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH Lens is a compact optic that is particularly well-suited for street photography applications. Beyond its svelte stature, this wide-angle prime also features an eight-element, six-group optical design that contains one aspherical element to minimize spherical aberrations and nearly all distortions for clean, sharp image quality throughout the aperture and focusing ranges. Additionally, for intuitive handling and use, the manual focus design lends precise control while shooting, and its short, just over 1" in length, profile barely protrudes into the viewfinder field of M cameras for a clearer, uncluttered perspective while composing images.

  • One aspherical element is incorporated within the sophisticated optical design to reduce spherical aberrations and nearly all distortions for increased sharpness and clarity. This aspherical element also contributes to a compact design that extends just slightly into the viewfinder of M cameras.
  • Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture is suitable for working in a variety of shooting conditions
  • Manual focus design provides a minimum focusing distance of 70cm with a maximum magnification ratio of 1:22.
  • An all-metal threaded lens hood is included, as well as a threaded protection ring for use when the lens hood is not attached. Additionally, metal lens caps are also included.
