The Minolta XE-5 is the younger sibling in the range of Minolta XE 35mm SLR cameras; introduced in 1975, and not sold on the Japanese home market. Like the XE-7, it has a fixed finder and the vertical running metal blade shutter, as well as a bright viewfinder with the convenient exposure meter scale to the right, for either manual or automatic operation. However, the double exposure facility of the XE-7 is absent, as is the film advance indicator. Due to these minor omissions, the XE-5 has traditionally been treated as an inferior unit to the XE-7, which is quite untrue, as the user will immediately note upon holding the camera. Incredibly well built and intuitively featured, the XE-5 remains a less expensive alternative to the XE-7, with all the best bits of its bigger sibling.
The on/off switch is at the rear of the camera, while the traditional hot-shoe is at the top of the finder. The body is finished in matte silver with a black wrap, while the prism housing is all black.
The MD Rokkor 50 mm f/1.2 is the successor of the legendary
MC Rokkor-PG 58mm f/1.2, a.k.a. the “bokeh king”. It uses a slightly different optical design, and is smaller and lighter. The change from MC to MD in this case also meant going from 8 to 6 aperture blades. Rendering images with beautiful depth and and contrast, this lens develops beautiful images.
