Filmneverdie Shooters - An interview with Jonathan Tavares

So, where do you come from & what do you do for a living?

I was born in Belo Horionte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. And I still live in here. I am a writer. I write articles for websites but my passion is writing novels and poetry.

How did you become inspired to shoot on film?

My family is like an oldschool one, so we like this kind of vintage vibes. We still have a lot of vinyls, VHS and analog cameras. Since I was a child I love the proccess of shooting and developing film, so I just brought it to my life since my childhood. I love nostalgia.

I used to have fun with my grandparents cameras, and it became my hobby and passion. Nowadays, I think film is the spirit and soul of a camera, and I try to translate on my images the feelings I only get from literature, specially from Nabokov writings, and from my dreams.

What format do you shoot? 35mm, Polaroid, 8 x 10 etc

I use to shoot on black and white 135 and 120 film. Always trying to experiment different formats and colors.

Why do you like this format?

135 and 120 are both great for enlarging and easy to develop here where I live. Most of my cameras are 135 and I have great results with them.

Where do you see the future of analogue photography?

I realize an analog photography expansion movement . This is mainly due to the lovers of this art, to the nostalgic ones and to the brands that have not abandoned the production of photographic film. I hope analog photography to grow even more; the digital world is full of facilities, but the analog world is full of surprises - and I always prefer the good unexpected things to the static certainties.
