How to Send Film for Developing: Everything You Need to Know

At FilmNeverDie, we’re passionate about film photography and dedicated to providing high-quality film development services. Whether you’re a seasoned photographer or just starting out, we’re here to ensure your memories are captured beautifully. We specialise in developing a variety of film types, making it easy for you to get your images processed.
In this blog, we will talk you through the different ways you can send your film to our lab for development. We want to make the process as easy and efficient as possible for you, whether that’s dropping off your film in person, through a drop box, or mailing it in. Read on to learn more.

How to Drop Off Your Film in Person

Where Do I Go for Film Development?

You can drop off your film directly at our CBD store, located at 6 Watertank Way, Melbourne. Our friendly team is ready to assist you from Monday to Saturday, 10 AM to 6 PM.

What to Expect When You Drop Off Your Film:

When you arrive, you’ll fill out an order form on one of our in-store iPads. This includes your email, the number of rolls you have, film type, and whether you want scans, prints, or a rush service.

After specifying your preferences, we'll print an envelope for you to place your film in. Please note, we’re a cashless store, so be prepared to pay electronically.

Once you’ve completed payment, we’ll start processing your film. If you’ve selected scans, you’ll receive an email with a Dropbox link to download your images or access them directly through our app. Our typical turnaround time is 3-5 days for color and up to a week for black and white, depending on our workload.

How Should I Prepare My Film for Shipping?

We also offer a mail-in service. You can place your order online by completing the same form. Next, place all your film in a suitable box or padded envelope and pop it in the post! Make sure your film is secure, particularly with 120 rolls that can become unwound and cause light leaks. Leave a note in the parcel with your name and phone number and mail it to us. Once your package arrives, we will get in touch with a payment link. Learn more about our mail-in service here.

Do You Have a Drop Box Service?

Yes, we do! FilmNeverDie has four film vending machines around Melbourne, located in Windsor, Fitzroy, Murrumbeena, and the Melbourne CBD. All vending machines are fully stocked with film and equipped with drop-off boxes for your films/disposable cameras. Complete our online form and post your film into one of our drop boxes. They are collected weekly, and we will then get in touch with you with a payment link. Learn more about our dropboxes here.

What Types of Film Do You Develop?

We develop C-41, Black & White, E-6, and ECN-2 films in both 35mm (including disposable cameras) and 120 (medium format). We also offer prints of your negatives in 4 x 6 size, to really bring your photos to life! Learn more about or development services here.

How Should I Package My Film?

When sending your film, it’s essential to securely package it to prevent any damage during transit. Use a padded envelope or box, and ensure the film canister/roll is protected.

Common Questions about Film Development:

What happens if I expose my film to light?

Exposing your film to light can ruin your photos, resulting in unwanted fogging and loss of detail. If you are worried your film has been accidentally exposed, leave a note in your order form so our team are aware.

How should I store my film before sending it?

Keep your film in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight to maintain its quality.

What Information Do I Need to Include in the Order Form?

When you arrive at our store, our friendly staff will guide you through filling out an order form. If mailing, ensure you include necessary information such as your name, contact details, and any specific instructions.

How Do I Receive My Film Scans?

After processing your film, we’ll send you an email and SMS with a Dropbox link to download your high-resolution scans. You don’t need a Dropbox account to access your images. Or you can download our FND app and access your images directly on your smartphone!

Can I Get a Rush Service?

Rush service is available most days, but it may not be offered on Saturdays or during busy/ maintenance periods.

Why Should I Keep My Negatives?

Keeping your negatives allows you to rescan images if needed, providing a backup if you lose your digital files. Negatives are also useful for traditional printing methods.
