Leica M5 framelines with a 40mm lens

The Leica M5 does NOT have native 40mm framelines.

When you mount a Voigtländer Nokton Classic 40mm f/1.4 (M-mount) on an M5, the camera will typically bring up the 50mm framelines.

What framelines the Leica M5 has

The M5 displays framelines in pairs:

  • 35mm / 135mm

  • 50mm / 90mm

There is no dedicated 40mm frame in any Leica M film body (except the later CLE, which is not Leica-branded).

Classic Film Photography Experience — Perfect for Rangefinder Enthusiasts & Collectors

Why this set is worth buying:
The Leica M5 is a standout piece from Leica’s legendary M-series (introduced in 1971), notable for being the first Leica rangefinder with integrated TTL (through-the-lens) light metering — a feature that makes shooting with manual film easier and more accurate than older rangefinders. It combines classic Leica build quality with robust mechanical engineering (shutter speeds up to 1/1000 s, bright viewfinder with framelines and spot metering) and excellent handling. Wikipedia

The M5’s larger body and ergonomic design make it comfortable for extended shooting sessions — and its TTL meter helps photographers nail exposures without guesswork, which is rare for fully mechanical 35mm rangefinders of this era. Macfilos

Paired with the Voigtlander Nokton Classic 40mm f/1.4 lens, this combination delivers a compelling manual-focus film setup:

  • Versatile focal length: ~40 mm gives a natural perspective for everyday shooting — great for street, portraits, landscapes, and general use. B&H Photo Video

  • Bright f/1.4 aperture: Lets you shoot in low light, achieve shallow depth of field, and get smooth background separation. B&H Photo Video

  • Manual focus with tactile control: Complete hands-on shooting that many photographers love with rangefinder systems. B&H Photo Video

  • Leica M-mount compatibility: Uses the standard Leica M bayonet, so the lens will work with a wide range of Leica film and digital M-mount cameras too. B&H Photo Video

Key Selling Points to Highlight:

Collector & enthusiast appeal: The Leica M5 is a unique, historically significant Leica — still sought after by collectors and analog shooters alike. Wikipedia
Robust mechanical build: All-metal construction and long-lasting mechanics typical of classic Leica M cameras. Wikipedia
Enhanced exposure control: Integrated light meter simplifies manual shooting compared with older Leica Ms. Wikipedia
Highly usable prime lens: The Voigtlander Nokton 40mm f/1.4 is compact, fast, and produces pleasing rendering with smooth bokeh. B&H Photo Video
Great value combo: A solid Leica body with a respected manual lens is ideal for someone stepping into higher-end film photography.
