The Olympus OM1 is arguably one of the best film fully mechanical SLR you can get. The first reason you should get an Olympus OM1 (Or any Olympus Om camera is this case) is for its wide array of accessories and beautiful Zuiko lenses. When the Om1 was introduced in 1972 it had already over 30 lenses and many more accessories available for it. The Zuiko lenses are amongst the sharpest available on the market and just like the camera itself are for the most part very compact compared to equivalent lenses from other manufacturers.
Focusing is done manually. The viewfinder is one of the biggest and brightest available on the market (Thank you Olympus!). As said before it is a fully mechanical camera. This means that there are no batteries needed to operate this camera and that, provided it gets the occasional service, it will probably out-live you.
Design wise the OM1 is a truly beautiful and unique camera. It was designed by the equally legendary Yoshihisa Maitani, creator of the Olympus Pen and Pen F design. It stands amongst the smallest SLR cameras ever made and is definitely the smallest fully mechanical one. It also ranked as one of the sturdiest cameras of its type. The winder and shutter and this cameras both feel really good. The shutter-speed selector is, unlike most SLR positioned on the front of the camera making it easy to adjust the speed and aperture all at one go.
If you’re looking to invest in a new camera (and thus system) the Om-1 could be a perfect match. Like all OM cameras, the Om-1 gives you to access a breathtaking array of lenses, as well as a host of interesting and useful accessories.
Due to the age of the OM-1s their light meters tend to be burnt out. Fortunately this is not too much of an issue as these cameras function fine without batteries.
This mechanical reliability is one of the main advantages of the Olympus Om-1. To meter a scene before taking a picture just use an external light-meter or a light-meter app on your phone (we recommend myLightmeter), or alternatively the foolproof sunny-16 rule.
